General Responsibilities: Provides the overall staff leadership for the oldest and largest association of cattlemen and beef producers in the United States. NCBA’s mission is to protect the business climate for beef production and build beef demand.    

Specific Responsibilities: Provides leadership to staff for implementation of NCBA’s policy priorities in Washington D.C. as well as beef checkoff programs which are funded through contracts with the Beef Promotion Operating Committee and voluntary contributions from State Beef Councils. Works with the Board of Directors and Executive Committee to obtain approval of annual divisional budgets for policy priorities and beef checkoff programs. Works to implement NCBA’s contributions to the Industry Long Range Plan and NCBA’s Strategic Plan. 

Position reports through the NCBA President and is responsible to the NCBA Executive Committee.

  • Provides a strong leadership and management climate throughout the association and delegates responsibility and appropriate authority to employees.
  • Directs the hiring/dismissal, training and annual performance appraisal of all employees. Directs the administration of the wage, salary and benefit programs for all employees.
  • Maintains frequent and thorough communication with the Elected Officers, Executive Committee, Board of Directors and committee leadership.
  • Establishes relationships with members, state affiliates and beef councils, Product Council, Allied Industry Council and other important stakeholders and keeps abreast of their input and concerns while providing them with vision and critical information needed to implement programs and policies.
  • Fosters a positive and productive relationship between NCBA and appropriate national and state beef and cattle related organizations, the agricultural industry, key non-agricultural industry stakeholders and the consumer and industry trade media.
  • Ensures that the operations of the association are in accordance with the by-laws and articles of incorporation and recommends changes to the by-laws when necessary.
  • Ensures the annual NCBA Strategic Plan is implemented.
  • Develops internal operating policies and procedures as needed.
  • Protects the financial assets and fiscal integrity of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association while expanding the revenue base and controlling expenses.
  • Provides timely and appropriate financial reports to the Elected Officers, Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Assures that all approved contractual agreements between the Association and outside persons or agencies are legally and financially sound and that satisfactory performance of the services specified is achieved.

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in agriculture or agri-business. An advanced degree may be beneficial, but not required.
  • Agricultural, livestock or beef industry background is strongly preferred.
  • Experience and understanding of association management is highly desirable. Strategic planning, budget development and financial management experience is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with the NCBA staff, producer leadership and a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • An enthusiastic self-starter with a results-oriented mentality. Ability to envision and articulate new opportunities for the Association and industry.
  • An experienced and persuasive spokesperson with strong written and oral communications skills. Leadership and management skills with the ability to develop, lead and motivate a positive and committed team.
  • Skilled at consensus building. Must possess high integrity, ethics and values.
  • Must have a passion for the beef industry, cattlemen and beef producers.
