POSITION SUMMARY
 
The Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) will be able to perform routine and special diagnostic procedures. The level of analyses performed may range from point of care testing to complex testing, involving all major areas of the clinical laboratory. The MT/MLS will have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. In addition, the MT/MLS will have responsibilities related to information processing, training and quality control within the laboratory.
 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education or Formal Training
 

  1. Baccalaureate degree or higher in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; or
  2. Baccalaureate degree or higher, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry); or
  3. Have education equivalent to at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours), including 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of medical laboratory technology courses; or
  4. Have education equivalent to at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours), including 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of science courses that include 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry, 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, and 12 semester hours(18 quarter hours) of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; or
  5. Completion of a clinical laboratory training program.

 
Copy of diploma, certificate, or academic transcript required.
Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)
 

  1. MT/MLS certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT),  OR
  2. Sectional certification depending on lab section (e.g M(ASCP) for Microbiology, H(ASCP) for Hematology, etc.), OR
  3. Specialty certification depending on lab section (e.g. SC(ASCP) for Specialist in Chemistry, SBB(ASCP) for Specialist in Blood Bank, etc).

Knowledge, Skill and Ability
 

  1. Past work performance with minimal supervision desirable.
  2. Ability to work well with people and within the team concept of patient care.
  3. Absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results.
  4. Reasoning ability and good independent judgement.
  5. Ability to work under stress - multiple demands at one time.
  6. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
  7. Professional discretion with patient information.
  8. Ability to communicate verbal and/or written effectively with other hospital personnel and with patients
  9. Rigid accuracy in the identification and reporting of numbers, names, and results.
  10. Willingness to work any shift and/or weekends.
  11. Ability to interact with and treat all age groups.
  12. Familiarity with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and The Joint Commission (TJC) laboratory regulations.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
 

  1. Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemical, electronic, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, etc.
  2. Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
  3. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat, and sit.
  4. Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and reaching. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch.

INTERRELATIONSHIPS
 

  1. The Technologist will work with the Laboratory Director, Managers, Supervisors, Leads, Pathologists, Staff and Medical Director.
  2. Interrelates with all hospital staff, physicians, and the public.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  1. Run appropriate laboratory technical equipment.
  2. Use laboratory information system.
  3. Instruct new employees and orient through the department in which they are working.
  4. Use hospital information system.
  5. Wash glassware.
  6. May be designated lab supervisor on weekends or holidays.
  7. Accurately charges lab procedures.
  8. Demonstrates the ENCORE philosophy at all times during contact with physicians, employees, patients and visitors.
  9. Coordinates the obtaining, recording, transporting, and reporting of referral services.
  10. Assists with supplies, inventory and storage.
  11. Adheres to all policies and procedures as established.
  12. Monitors test results for validity.
  13. Participates in proficiency testing.
  14. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards.
  15. Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
  16. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include:
    1. The use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g. gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses);
    2. Handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and
    3. Hand washing as appropriate.
