The Sheriff, as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the County, is required by statute to keep and preserve the peace, serve and execute all processes, writs, precepts and orders issued or made by lawful authority. The Sheriff is in charge of the County Detention facilities and may also act as the fire warden of the County in case of prairie or forest fires.

Commissioned Deputies along with many non-commissioned personnel, create the foundation of the Sheriff's Office. Within the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office there are four divisions to efficiently and effectively promote safety in the community. Each division is specialized in a certain areas of operation. These divisions allow the prestige of interacting wit the citizens of Arapahoe County by participating through many of the Sheriff's Office community awareness programs.

Arapahoe County Sheriff's personnel are highly respected by both citizens and the law enforcement community through proven leadership. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is nationally recognized for its professionalism and service to the community. In fact, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office has been awarded the Triple Crown Award by the National Sheriffs' Association. The Triple Crown Award recognizes sheriffs' offices that have received simultaneous accreditation from the three accrediting agencies: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), American Correctional Association (ACA), and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is one of only about 25 agencies that have been able to accomplish current accreditation by all three of the major accreditation programs that focus exclusively on law enforcement and corrections.

Within the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office there are the following Bureaus:
* Administration
* Detentions/Administrative Services Bureau
* Professional Standards Bureau
* Public Safety Bureau

The Sheriff’s Office Administration consists of the Sheriff, Undersheriff, Emergency Management and Budget and Logistics.

The Detentions/Administrative Services Bureau is responsible for Detentions Operations, Detentions Administration, Alternative Sentencing and Administrative Services.  Detention Operations is responsible for the safely and humanely housing, controlling, and protecting prisoners held by Arapahoe County.  The Operations within the Detention Facility include Medical Services, Classifications, Court Services, Line Operations, Property, and a maintenance program.

The Professional Standards Bureau is responsible for Internal Affairs, Human Resources, Training, Accreditation and Risk Management.

The Public Safety Bureau is responsible for Patrol Operations, Communications, Investigation Operations, Special Operations, Search and Rescue and Task Forces. Patrol Deputies are assigned to patrol the streets of Centennial and the unincorporated area of the county, and are also instrumental with community relations.  Investigation Services is responsible for the criminal investigation of reported crimes (including environmental crimes), evidence preservation and analysis, and victim assistance.  Investigation Services also maintains a Bomb Squad and a Special Investigation Section.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants seeking employment with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office should be aware of certain requirements that are inherent with any law enforcement profession. Honest, maturity, self-discipline, initiative and an exceptional ability to deal with people and traumatic events are expected of all applicants.

Deputy Positions
* Applicants must be United States Citizens and must be able to effectively communicate in written and spoken English.
* Minimum Age for Applicants is 21 years.
* High School Diploma or GED
* P.O.S.T. Certified or certifiable



Civilian Positions
* Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and must be able to effectively communicate in written and spoken English.
* Minimum Age for Applicants is 18 years.
* High School Diploma or GED
* 1 Colorado Police Officer Standards and Training Certificate

The selection process for these positions may include a written test, an assessment process, and/or other selection mehtods designed to measure applicants' ability to perform the essential functions of the job they are seeking. Required examinations also include a polygraph examination, medical examination, background investigation, and psychological evaluation (for certain positions).

BENEFITS

A career with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office offers many benefits. These benefits include life insurance, long-term disability insurance, health insurance, vision insurance, and dental insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, and holidays. In addition, the county offers a defined benefit retirement plan where the employee contributes 6% of their pay to the retirement fund and the County matches the employee contribution. The County also offers an IRS Section 457 deferred compensation plan, when employees may defer income for retirement and invest their money in a variety of mutual funds.

Life and disability insurance coverages are effective from the employee's date of hire; medical and dental insurance coverages are effective on the first day of the month coinciding with or following the date of hire.

For full-time employees, the County pays 100% of the premium cost of the employee medical and dental coverage and 50% of the premium cost of dependent medical and dental coverage. Full-time employees who waive medical coverage receive taxable compensation of $80per month.

County employees are paid monthly on the last day of the month, and premiums are deducted from each paycheck.
