Able to work morning and evening all months of the year Monday - Thursday, except July.
75% of classes are in the evening, so ability to work up to four evenings/ week is required for full-time positions.
Able to interact with anyone regardless of cultural, language and socioeconomic background with dignity and respect
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
Experience using a curriculum and syllabus to plan and deliver math and language arts lessons to youth and/or adults whose skills are below secondary level
Two years or more experience using a curriculum and syllabus to plan and deliver English language lessons to adult non-native English speakers
Experience must be in a program that has outcomes/targets for attendance, retention and academic growth
Experience using standardized assessment results to inform instruction.
Proficient using technology and willing to become proficient using online learning platforms used by the ELA & ABE programs
If don’t hold valid Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABEA) issued by CDE, must be willing to earn
Lift and/or move items that are up to 10 pounds
Experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) (e.g., Google Classroom, Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or Edmodo).
Current certification for proctoring the Comprehensive Student Assessment System (CASAS) Life and Work reading exams and/or the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) 11/12.
Participates in student centered coaching with the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Coordinator and in learning communities to ensure program is of the highest instructional quality and professionalism
Uses adult appropriate materials (not materials clearly designed for children or teens)
Uses College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and results from standardized assessment and/or HSE practice test results to plan instruction
Uses techniques and activities that make content accessible to language learners
Uses written instructional plans for each lesson and consistently aligns planning and instruction with CCRS aligned curriculum, syllabus and learners’ goals
Evaluates learning with formative assessments in each class meeting
Integrates career exploration, planning, and monitoring into instruction
Delivers instruction from start time to end time of each class as listed on the schedule, exhibiting cultural sensitivity, enthusiasm and a positive attitude
Retains learners and ensures that at least 70% of learners who begin the course take a standardized posttest after earning the required minimum hours of instruction
Engages and challenges all students through active learning, rigor and higher order thinking skills so that at least 35% of learners improve one or more levels on the approved standardized assessment
Assigns learners’ activities each week on the online learning platform used by the ABE and/or ELA program
Monitors learner progress on the online learning platform(s); contacts learners who are not actively using the platform to determine if they need technical support
Learners not attending weekly Learning Lab for 3 hours must complete the remaining hours in online platform
Updates attendance in LACES within 24 hours of the class meeting using the correct subject area, reaching out to non-attending and struggling learners after each absence documenting three attempts.
Submit LACES change request to drop learner as soon as he/she confirms non-attendance or after three attempts with no response, whichever happens first.
Communicates at least weekly with Learning Lab Instructor(s) who teach your learners
Communicates changes to information stored in the program’s database, LACES, using the LACES change form in a timely manner
Telephone number, address, goals, employment, barriers
Helps with outreach and recruitment for classes, e.g. share Facebook posts; gives flyers to current students; delivers flyers in the community
Helps enroll learners
Review registration forms for completeness and accuracy
Facilitate orientation using slides and a script
Administers online standardized assessments
Actively contributes to program improvement efforts by completing assigned tasks with integrity and enthusiasm and by meeting deadlines
Participates in a positive, professional manner in staff meetings and professional learning opportunities (must participate in 12 professional learning opportunities offered by ALC in 2018-19)
Maintains positive, professional behavior and communication when representing Adams 14 and ALC at program sites and elsewhere in the community
Participates in annual training on policies, procedures and processes
Maintains certification in administering standardized assessments used by ALC
Participates in monthly meeting to discuss what is working, any challenges, upcoming tasks and activities and any questions
Aware of community organizations that support adults with barriers to employment and education; refer learners to these services if needed
Collaborates with ALC Career Advising Coordinator to provide supportive services to learners who are looking for employment or seeking to enter postsecondary education
POSITION: Adult Education Instructor – Adult Basic Education (ABE) & English Language Acquisition (ELA)
Reports to the Coordinator of the Adult Learning Center. Plans, develops, and implements the Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Acquisition (ELA) curriculum, which are aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Adults. Provides information to learners about the HSE exams, GED, HiSET and TASC, and prepares them for those exams. Provide opportunities for learners to explore education and career options. Helps learners develop and follow up on education and career plan.
