What Success Looks Like In This Job



Perform professional and complex engineering work involving the review and design of the proposed development, roadway design, drainage system design, utility plans, and environmental assessment studies for its compliance with the local, state, and federal standards and regulations. Design and manage capital improvement projects and prepare engineering plans, specifications, and construction bids.
 

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Prepare special engineering studies and reports; perform special assignments on engineering problems as necessary; prepare specific studies for other County staff.
  • Attend Board of County Commissioners, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and other public meetings as directed.
  • Respond to public or other inquiries relative to engineering policies and procedures on specific projects and other divisional information.
  • Provide technical and professional engineering support services relative to capital improvements and current development.
  • Prepare engineering designs, specifications, costs, and quantity estimates of Public Works projects; identify required easements or permits for roadway, drainage, and other Public Works projects.
  • Prepare requests for proposals and bids; review contract bids and proposals; assist in the coordination and review of consultants' design work.
  • Participate in the planning of the proposed projects and make recommendations in establishing schedules and budgets.
  • Review both development and capital improvement project plans for compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. Development cases may include subdivisions, redevelopment, land use, and variance cases.
  • Identify and plan required capital improvement projects for system expansion.
  • Design the necessary modifications and/or new construction of Public Works roadway, drainage, and related projects within County, State, and Federal guidelines.
  • Conduct public meetings regarding public works projects.
  • Exercise professional engineering judgment in accordance with current accepted practice of civil engineering and appropriate laws and codes.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Principles and practices of engineering as applied to drainage planning, design, stormwater quality, and construction projects to include knowledge of county policies and procedures, regulatory issues, and permitting standards.
  • Ability to plan the work of and manage maintenance staff, manage construction projects, and provide support to stormwater quality support staff.
  • Ability to evaluate drainage situations, provide feedback, opinions, standard and basic design solutions, create designs for improvement projects to bid out for maintenance and enhancement of our existing infrastructure, and review construction documents to determine the adequacy of adopted standards and regulations.
  • Ability to manage contractors and internal staff
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes, and regulations involving stormwater quality regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications for Success

  • Experience:  Minimum of ten (10) years of increasingly responsible professional Civil Engineering experience.
  • Education and Training:  Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • License or Certificate: 
    • Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is required.
    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Background check:  Must pass a criminal background check.
