JOB TITLE: Lifeguard
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation JOB REFERENCE: 09-44 SALARY RANGE: $7.30 to $11.50 per hour HIRING RANGE: $7.30 per hour POSITION TYPE: Seasonal, September through December, 25 hrs per week CLOSING DATE: Open Until Filled A City of Golden application and supplemental questionnaire must be submitted for employment consideration. SUMMARY Perform a wide variety of lifeguard and pool maintenance duties for the City's indoor and outdoor pool facilities. Ensure the safety of all participants in the aquatics area. Follow and enforce all pool and safety regulations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Keep pools and pool area in safe condition by checking safety equipment and proper chemical balance. Inform supervisor on duty of any staff, patron, or chemical issues. Guard lap and/or leisure pool(s) and supervise patrons of swimming pool. Caution and advise swimmers regarding unsafe areas. Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administer first aid. Educate patrons about pool policies and regulations. Maintains order in swimming areas. Establish and maintain a good public relations image for all aquatic programs and activities. Inspect facilities for cleanliness. Perform pool cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned. Perform and record pool water testing as assigned. Determine chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit. Keep all certifications current. Update to new material as necessary. Attend staff meetings and in-service training as required. Responsible for finding a qualified replacement when it is necessary to miss a scheduled shift. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum 16 years of age with one month related experience or training. Must possess excellent customer service skills. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of U.S. currency and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense and to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current First aid and CPR certification for The Professional Rescuer. AED Certifications. Current certifications in Lifeguard Training. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to deal with diverse age groups and populations. MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Whistle, swimsuit, rescue tube, spine board, and rescue equipment. Occasional use of chlorine and daily use of chemical agents. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance in and out of pool; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to hear distress calls above pool noise. Indoor and outdoor pool environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Important Notes
