Blog Post: Action Words Can Make or Break Your Resume

posted Wednesday, May 30, 2007 11:12 AM

The job market is filled with frustrated applicants wondering why they didn’t receive an invitation for an interview or secure the desired position.  Often it comes down to their resume.  Although filled with education, experience and accomplishments the resume fails to translate successes onto paper.  Action words provide impact and purpose to your achievements and capture the hiring manager’s attention.

Try using some of the following action words at the beginning of your sentences:  Formulated, Analyzed, Administered, Prevented, Originated, Selected, Simplified, Generated, Minimized, Negotiated, Launched, Founded, Reviewed, Created, Developed, and Implemented.

Here is an example of action words in resume format:

Planned and oversaw the development and implementation of the 54 Project in the southwest region

Recruited and hired a respected botany specialist to oversee the greenhouse center

Sold the 54 Project in 1991 resulting in a revenue increase of $10.2M

The action words mentioned in this article are very effective as they stick to those who are reading the resume. I have used some of them and have been told they show personality.

Don't make the mistake the writer of this blog made. Résumé should always be written with the accents. Any professional résumé writer worth his or her salt would know that.

Actually Deborah, because many text editors and other publishing devices don't easily allow for the accents (and sometimes don't render the accents correctly in any regard), it is considered quite acceptable to write "resume" without the accents.

In fact, there are many very large companies (Monster.com ring a bell?) that just use "resume" when talking about resumes, or providing resume services. If the industry leaders like Monster.com don't think you need the accents, I think it's probably ok ;) Or are you going to tell me that Monster.com - which probably sells more resumes than anyone else - doesn't know what it's talking about?!?

(More proof that CPRW certification doesn't necessarily mean you know what you're talking about when it comes to the business of resume writing.)
