Blog Post: Will I be able to keep up with the technology?

posted Thursday, September 18, 2008 6:06 AM

Yesterday I went to a training about Web 2.0--the next evolution in website technology, allowing site visitors to interact and add to the value of the site. jobing.com uses this technology well (an example is your ability to respond to this blog). Yet sitting in the training, I was overwhelmed with all of the new options and information I'll need to try and master. Whew, it seems exhausting!

But exciting, too....

In my career counseling practice, helping adults choose new careers and job search for great-fit opportunities, some of my biggest challenges have been nudging my clients to interface with other professionals to gather information and network for jobs. They worry about being rejected, being shy, not knowing what to say. But now, with tools like Facebook and LinkedIn, they can connect with others through avenues that allow them to have a little more control over how they present themselves--and ultimately achieve the results they want.

Pretty cool...

Back in 1993, when my husband and I were in grad school, there was a period of time when he was working on an engineering project in Germany. I was holed up in a little student housing apartment, missing him like crazy, so one of our mutual engineering friends set me up to be able to communicate through email. It was a brand new technology then, and I felt as if I was piloting a spaceship to the moon every time I wrote and sent a message. Now I send zillions of emails, plus do things like edit the content for my company's website, www.careersolutionsgroup.net.

Not exactly Web 2.0-level stuff, but I'm getting there...

So yes, when it comes to the technology associated with our work world today, I get overwhelmed. But I keep telling myself, "Katy, you don't need to know it all today. Just keep taking baby steps and you'll figure it out as you go."

And you will, too...
