APP-UniPath LLC is the largest Pathology Practice in the Rocky Mountain Region, with 25 pathologist physicians and supporting histotechnologists, cytotechnologists, management, and other personnel. Our staff provides laboratory and pathology services to hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, laboratories, and other facilities along the Front Range of Colorado and beyond.

We are currently recruiting for a Grossing Supervisor. This position’s primary responsibility is supervision of the Grossing Department, including Pathologist’s Assistants and Grossing Techs for all APP-UniPath affiliated hospitals. This position is accountable for payroll, scheduling, policy development and general operational duties for the hospital affiliated sites. In addition, this position routinely performs the technical functions associated with a Pathologist Assistant (Float), with periodic presence at all APP-UniPath sites including potential float at the main laboratory. This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday, 1st shift with probable hours of 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM - some flexible scheduling maybe required.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties:
  • Responsible for oversight, direction, and complete training of other grossers in the UniPath system (UCL, HealthONE, & Centura).
  • Responsibility to ensure three month and annual evaluations are completed in a timely manner by the pathologists working with the assigned grossing techs. Presents evaluation to employee.
  • Responsibility for oversight of grossing tech meetings, payroll and scheduling.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Technical Services and Medical Directors, is responsible for hiring, development and termination of grossing techs in the UniPath system striving to maintain adequate staffing and coverage.
  • Collaborates with others to ensure work processes and work flow meet organizational needs and in accordance with established vision, mission and values.
  • Resolves conflict through finding common ground and obtaining cooperation with minimum disruption.
  • Recognizes problems within the department and provides adequate and reasonable input to the Director.

    Bench Duties:
  • Responsible for gross dissection and dictation of all relevant specimens. Review daily surgery schedule for review with pathologist in conjunction with frozen section requests. Assist in preparation and staining of frozen sections for pathologists.
  • Assists in the preparation and performance of postmortem examinations.
  • Assures proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supplies and cleanliness of the pathology cutting room & autopsy suite.
  • Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Skills / Requirements
    Education & Experience:

  • Graduate of a NCCLS approved training program for Pathologists Assistants or OTJ trained with ASCP certification. Maintain appropriate CME’s.
  • ASCP Board Certification as a Pathologist Assistant. Member of AAPA and ASCP preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform gross dissection and dictation of tissue.


    Position Specific Requirements & Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of key pathology principles including anatomy.
  • Solid working knowledge of the major functions of the department in order to provide the results defined by executive management.
  • Skill in proper training/teaching of pathology grossing technicians.
  • Ability to handle fresh and fixed cytology and anatomic pathology specimens.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and communicate (oral and written) across all organizational levels.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, evaluate situations, and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to maintain the necessary levels of confidentiality to protect client’s privacy and proprietary organizational information.
  • Ability to perform and adhere to scheduled competency examinations.
  • Requires visual acuity, normal color perception, finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Knowledge in handling chemicals and biohazard materials.
